Dear Reader:
As the days get longer, spring fever is starting to take hold. Alas, the weather has remained cold. Take heart! Certainly, the longer days will bring warm weather with them. March 20th, we hosted a cozy candlelit share your favourite poetry event. While the turnout was slim, the engagement was high. From Dorothy Parker to Charles Bukowski with a dramatic dose of Auld Lang Syne by Robert Burns. In April, we will host another evening poetry event. Please plan to come and share your favourite poetry. On Thursday, March 21, at the Russell Library, Mayor Judy graced us with her presence as guest reader for children’s story time from 1:00-2:00 pm. Judy also donated a floor puzzle to the library: One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, by Dr Seuss. Mayor Judy is a natural with people of all ages and the children and adults in attendance listened with rapt attention as stories unfolded and imaginations were inspired. Thank you, Mayor Judy, for taking time out of your busy schedule to help us make a difference in the lives of children.
A gaggle of children from Lots-a-Tots in Russel walked over with their chaperone and were gifted with Easter treats lovingly and enthusiastically curated by the ladies of Russell’s Parkland Linc. Thank you, Ladies of Parkland Link. Next month, we will host another story time event with another guest reader. Keep a lookout for posters around town and on social media.

What does the white world know
Of flowers eager to grow
Under the snow?
Do the brown limbs care
As they swing in the crisp clear air?
But O, little seed, you know,
Lying patiently so—
Head underground,
Only wait—the call will go round,
You’ll know the sound.
And O, the snow must go,
For you, little seed, are waiting to grow!
O, the joy to lift the head
Straight above the dark brown bed,
O, the joy to feel the tread
Of spring with skipping bare brave feet,
Down the warm, wet village street.
Ah, then the brown branches care
And try to touch her hair;
Streaming out in the new warm air,
And O, the sky is glad, and every brook and glen
For then,
The world begins all over again!
As you may recall, Bernard Neuhofer, Shop Teacher of Major Pratt School, made the library a beautiful Suggestions Box. We regularly check this box, eagerly looking forward to anonymous notes of input. Sometimes, inside the box there are book suggestions or events suggestions, or most recently, there were delightful suggestions with a bent toward ambience and community engagement. Dear Anonymous, thank you for your suggestions. Russell & District Regional Library looks forward to fulfilling and implementing suggestions left in our Suggestion Box.
