Library News: March 1, 2024

Dear Reader:

Hallelujah!  It’s March.  There is a new artist on display in the Library Gallery, there are new books on the shelves and we’re kickin’ off another line-up of events at the library.  Before I go any further, however, I must first thank all the students at Major Pratt School in Russell and Binscarth School in Binscarth that coloured all the beautiful pictures that filled the library windows for I Love to Read Month.  We asked and you delivered.   Thank you for making our libraries’ windows veritably dance with colour and joy.

We are always getting new books to our shelves at the library but, we don’t always tell you about them here.  This week, I want to take a few sentences to tell you about a new book called Griffin & Sabine: An Extraordinary Correspondence, 25th Anniversary Limited Edition.  While the book is called a novel, it has no page numbers and takes the tactile experience of reading a print book in a kind of juvenile direction with pictures and postcards that come out of the envelopes between the pages of the book.  This book is “part romance, part mystery and completely a work of art,” rolled into one and tied together with the lost custom of sending postcards.  You won’t want to miss this literary treasure that is part of a series that will stay with you for years.  Truly “wondrous, ingenious, gorgeous.”  Available to check out now at both Binscarth and Russell Branch.

About the artist whose work is on display in the Russell Library Gallery. In her own words:”

“Phyllis Herman was born and raised in Yorkton, Sk.  I have been painting since 1972 but have drawn since my early school days.  Prairie scenes are my favourite subject, but I also enjoy painting flowers, animals, and the odd portrait.

I’ve also participated in the Regina Baazart, Yorkton Sunflower, and numerous small town art shows.  Our Local Art Centre, at the Godfrey Dean has shown my work as well as the “Gallery on the Roof,” in Regina.

Last May, I took a Water Colour class in Qu’Appelle Valley given by Jack Reid of Toronto.  I have taught Oil Painting for several years and continue to do so.”

Last, but certainly not least, Tyla Betke’s sold-out Ukrainian Cross Stitch Workshop Fundraiser took place in the Library Gallery on February 21st. Tyla has the Midas Touch.  I have yet to see her plan an event that is not sold out/standing room only.  Thank you, Ms. Betke for choosing the Russell Library as your venue.  We love welcoming you.
